How to Set the Most Complete Car Valve, Purpose and Equipment

How to adjust the car valve must be done correctly so that the engine performance remains stable. The reason is, the function of this car valve is to regulate the exit and entry of air and fuel in the car.

Car valves are also known as valves or valves. This component is commonly found in an engine, not to mention car engines, especially in the cylinder head.

Adjustment of car valves that do not fit can cause various problems in the car. Therefore, special handling is needed when adjusting the car valve and usually car owners prefer to do the car valve adjustment at a repair shop.

However, if you want to try to adjust the car valve yourself, you can follow the way to adjust the car valve below. However, before that, you should first understand what a car valve is, its purpose, and the tools needed to tune a car.

What Is a Car Valve?

Reporting from Meineke, a car valve or often also called a car valve or in English is called a valve is a mechanical component located on the cylinder head of a car. Functionally, the function of a car valve is the same as other types of valves, namely regulating the inflow and outflow of fuel and air in the car.

The valve or valve plays an important role in the car. Because, if there is a leak or interference with the valve, such as the wrong size, it can cause a decrease in engine power or the car's performance will decrease.

Therefore, it is important to know how to adjust the car valve correctly to avoid leaks or other disturbances. There are two types of car valves, namely the intake valve (IN valve) and exhaust valve (EX valve) which have different functions.

The function of the IN valve is to regulate the flow of air and fuel in the combustion chamber so that the amount is in accordance with what is needed by the engine for the combustion process. The intake valve has a larger diameter than the exhaust valve so that the flow of fuel into the material chamber can be optimal.

Meanwhile, the exhaust valve or EX valve has a function to remove residual gases from the combustion process. Its small diameter makes it easier for the residual combustion gases to exit the combustion chamber.

This car valve problem may be quite rare experienced by the latest car owners. However, this valve problem is quite common in older cars, so valve adjustment is often required.

Well, because this problem is very rare in today's cars, many people don't recognize when the car valve has a problem. Here are some signs of a car valve problem, reported by Repair Smith.

  • Poor engine performance or the car loses power
  • Sounds like ticking or popping on the car engine
  • Check engine light is on
  • Fuel consumption becomes more wasteful

If you feel any signs of damage to the car valve, immediately repair it at a trusted car repair shop.

Purpose of Car Valve Adjustment

Before getting into how to adjust a car valve, do you know what the purpose of this car valve adjustment is? If you don't know, here are some of the purposes for making car valve adjustments.

  1. Ensuring the efficiency of the intake of a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinders of the car which will then be compressed for the combustion process so as to produce the power needed for the car to move.
  2. Ensuring the efficient disposal of combustion gases from inside the car cylinders into the free air through the exhaust manifold.
  3. In order to regulate the entry and exit of air and fuel in the car cylinders can work optimally.
  4. Keeping the car's performance stable.

Given the importance of the function of this car valve, the adjustment must be done correctly and appropriately. One little can affect the performance of the car engine.

The errors that usually occur when adjusting car valves include:

  • Adjustment of the valve is too tight, causing the valve to open early, compression pressure is low, and the car loses power. As a result, either ignition or reverse ignition occurs.
  • Adjustment of the valve that is too loose causes the valve to open more slowly so that the amount of fuel and air entering and leaving is low. This is also the cause of the appearance of noisy car sounds or vibrations in the car engine.
  • The valve adjustment between cylinders that are not the same can cause the process of entering and leaving air and fuel being not the same. This results in engine hunting because the power between the cylinders is different.

Tools That Need to Be Prepared

Before adjusting the car valve, you should prepare the tools that will be needed first. The following tools are generally needed when adjusting the car valve.

  • Ring lock size 14/12.
  • Ring key or Shock key size 14/17/19 which will be used to turn the pully.
  • Plus ( + ) and Minus ( – ) screwdrivers.
  • Feeler Gauge, a tool for measuring the thickness of the gap.
  • Toolbox Set.
  • Manual (if any).

How to Adjust the Car Valve

Keep in mind that every car has a different way of adjusting the car valve, depending on the make and series. For example, how to adjust a 4-cylinder car valve is certainly different from the way a 6-cylinder car valve is set.

Therefore, you need to read the manual provided by the car first. However, in this article, we will discuss how to adjust the car valve in general.

Warm Up the Car Engine

The first step you have to do is preheat the car engine for approximately 5 minutes to adjust the engine to existing specifications or those that are owned according to manufacturer standards.

Remove the Cylinder Head Cover

After heating the car, the next step is to remove the cylinder head cover by using the ring or wrench that you provided earlier. Make sure when removing the cylinder head cap there are no interfering parts, such as hoses and air filter housings.

Turn the Crankshaft

How to adjust the next car valve is to turn the crankshaft exactly at 0. For this method, you can see how in the guide on the engine timing chain cover.

Determine the Tdc/top Position of the Compression Cylinder 1 or 4

To determine the position of TDC/TOP compression cylinder 1 or 4 is done in the following way.

When turning the crankshaft, pay attention to which cylinder inlet valve moves. You can move the engine crankshaft pulley to see the intake valve on cylinder 1 or 4.

If both valves move, it means that the valve cannot be adjusted because it is at the end of the exhaust stroke and the beginning of the intake stroke. In addition, if the two moving valves are on cylinder 4, it means the engine is in TOP 1.

Another way to determine the compression TDC/TOP position of cylinder 1 or 4 is to check the push rod. When the valve is not compressed or closed, the push rod must also not be depressed so that it can be moved or rotated.

If the movablepush rod is visible on cylinder 1, it means that the cylinder is already in the TOP 1 position.

Tighten the Cylinder Head Bolt

If you have got the TOP 1 or 4 position on the cylinder, the next step is to tighten the cylinder bolt head that was previously opened. In this step, it is important to ensure that the valve masher support or rocker arm is tightened.

When tightening the cylinder head bolts, it should not be done carelessly. Here are some things to watch out for.

  • The valve strike support bolt must be at a torque of 1.8-2.4 kg-m.
  • The cylinder head bolts must be at a torque of 5.4 – 6.6 kg-m.

Adjusting the Valve Clearance

To adjust the valve clearance, you can follow the following method.

  • Loosen nut 12 by using a ring wrench 12.
  • Place a feeler gauge or valve gap gauge into the gap between the valve stem and the rocker arm.
  • Adjust the valve 1-2-3-5 using a feeler gauge with a 0.3 mm exhaust valve and 0.2 mm intake valve.
  • Use a screwdriver to adjust, tighten, or loosen the valve adjusting bolt.

After the valve clearance adjustment is complete, the next step is to just tighten the retaining nut while holding the adjusting bolt so it doesn't move. Check the valve or car valve again by feeling the pull or friction from the feeler gauge.

Turning the Crankshaft

When the adjustment is complete in the TOP 1 position, you must turn the crankshaft pulley back up to 360 degrees clockwise so that it fits in the TOP 4 position. Then, adjust the valve clearance in the same way.

Tips from Auto Insurance Agencies! Those are the ways to adjust the car valve that you can try. Do not forget to check again whether the valve adjustment is correct or not.

If there is an abnormal sound, then there could be an error in the settings. However, if there is no abnormal sound or other, it means that your car valve adjustment was successful.
