What is Mesothelioma Prognosis: the Definition, Cure, and Survival Rate?

What is Mesothelioma Prognosis?

The definition of mesothelioma is a type of cancer attacking the inner organs of human being. The cancer cells are not growing exactly on the essential inner organs, such as the heart, lungs, and abdomen. Instead, the cancer calls attack the protective membrane around the important organs.

Mesothelioma is quite a rare cancer. It does not happen to a lot of people. However, the severe health condition is really dangerous. When the lining surrounding the important organs is ruined by the cancer cells, it can cause massive damage and most likely to claim the life of the sufferer.

The main cause of mesothelioma cancer is asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a sort of mineral often used in constructions, especially in making tall buildings. When the particles of asbestos are being inhaled constantly, it can trigger the cancer cells to start growing on the inner organs' membrane.

The Cure of Mesothelioma

The cure or treatments to weaken the mesothelioma cancer cells are available in many forms. Some of them are effective and some of them are not quite working in eliminating the cancer cells. The common cancer-curing medical methods, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery are included in the list of treatment for mesothelioma cancer.

Most mesothelioma patients are taking more than one treatment to kill the cancer cells. It is believed that a combination of two or three treatments to cure the cancer is more effective to eliminate the cancer cells compared to a single treatment only.

The Survival Rate of Mesothelioma

Even though the treatments for mesothelioma cancer are widely available, the survival rate of the cancer is slim. It is believed that the survival rate of this type of cancer is around 5 year only. The survival rate is based on many aspects, including cancer stage, age, and the cell type of the mesothelioma.

The survival rate of 5 year is around 45% if the patient is less than 45 years old. As for patients aged 45 to 54, it is believed that only 15% of them will survive over 5 years after being diagnosed by cancer. Seeing that the survival rate is quite slim, it is going to be wise for everyone to never take this type of cancer for granted. Contacting a physician as soon as they feel something wrong with their body, especially in the inner organs, is a wise decision indeed.
